By far, nearly every Christian on Planet Earth believes that billions of souls will suffer for all eternity in hellfire. But is it true? Let’s examine what Scripture says …\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eWhat does the Bible actually reveal about hell?\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eClear and Unmistakable\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe best place to start is with Scripture’s most famous verse:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life\" (John 3:16).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLook carefully: How does this verse actually describe the fate of the lost?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eThey perish\u003c\/em\u003e. “To perish” means “to cease to exist.” Someone who exists eternally, even in hell, could not be said to “perish.” The opposite of eternal life is eternal death—not eternal torment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFurthermore, the apostle Paul says that the lost will be punished with “everlasting destruction” (2 Thessalonians 1:9). What is everlasting? Their destruction! That means the wicked are \u003cem\u003edestroyed \u003c\/em\u003eforever, a fate radically different than being \u003cem\u003etormented \u003c\/em\u003eforever.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePsalm 37:20 says, “The wicked shall perish; … into smoke they shall vanish away.” Does this sound like eternal torment—or eternal destruction?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut what about Jesus? What did He say? Christ contrasted the fate of the saved and the lost in this way: “These will go away into everlasting \u003cem\u003epunishment\u003c\/em\u003e, but the righteous into eternal \u003cem\u003elife\u003c\/em\u003e” (Matthew 25:46). There are two ends: “eternal life” and “everlasting punishment.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe verdict is clear, isn’t it? The final result of punishment is a death that can never be undone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhat About “Eternal Fire”?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDid you know the Bible says that for the city of Sodom’s many sins, it suffered “the vengeance of eternal fire”? (Jude 7). Yet is Sodom still burning on Earth somewhere today? Not according to Scripture, which also says that Sodom was turned to ash. (See 2 Peter 2:6.)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo what does the Bible mean when it says “eternal fire”?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Hebrew word translated as “eternal” or “everlasting” (\u003cem\u003eolam\u003c\/em\u003e) can mean something that has been “completed.” For instance, Exodus 21:6 says that a servant was to serve his master “forever,” yet such service ended when the servant died. Also, the prophet Samuel was to remain at the temple “forever” (1 Samuel 1:22), but he too eventually died. Even Jonah said that he was in the belly of the whale “forever” (Jonah 2:6), yet he was there only three days.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut what about when Jesus warned that there would be a hellfire “that shall never be quenched”? (Mark 9:45). Isn’t that a clue that the fires of hell go on forever? Centuries earlier, the prophet Jeremiah also predicted that the palaces of Jerusalem would be burned in a fire that “shall not be quenched” (Jeremiah 17:27). Sure enough, the Babylonians came and burned Jerusalem, just as predicted, yet the fires—the fires that were not to be “quenched”—have, in fact, burned out long ago.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThus, the warning Jesus gave about hell—that such fires would not be quenched—means the fires will not go out \u003cem\u003euntil their work is complete\u003c\/em\u003e; that is, until the lost are destroyed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePaul, Peter, and Jesus all warned about the final “destruction” of the lost (Philippians 3:19; 2 Peter 2:1; Matthew 7:13). All three also spoke of the promise of eternal life for the saved (John 17:3; Romans 2:7; 1 Peter 1:4). Again, the opposite of eternal life is not eternal torment; the opposite of eternal life is eternal death.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eEternal Life or Eternal Death?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“The Lord is very compassionate and merciful” (James 5:11). People are rightly justified in rejecting a God who claims to be love while torturing millions in hellfire for eternity for a finite life of sins. The good news is that such a God does not exist!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, it is equally true that God will not allow unrepentant sinners to live forever. “Just and true are Your ways, O King of the saints!” (Revelation 15:3).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInstead, God offers two possible eternities to you: eternal life on a new earth (2 Peter 3:13), or eternal destruction. The choice is for each individual to make.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJesus, who did not deserve to die, offered His perfect life for you. When you accept Christ’s offer of salvation, you are saved by His grace and are welcomed into His eternal kingdom. Humans Are Dust!\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKnowing what a human is—and isn't—is important to understanding the truth about the afterlife. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eContrary to popular belief, we do not house souls in our bodies. Instead, you \u003cem\u003eare \u003c\/em\u003ea soul, which the Bible calls a flesh-and-blood \"living being.\" Genesis 2:7 says, \"God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a \u003cem\u003eliving being\u003c\/em\u003e.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt might be strange to hear, but the Bible is plain. In Hebrew, you are a \u003ci\u003enephesh\u003c\/i\u003e—a soul, a living being. And when souls die, according to the Scripture, they turn to dust.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou don't have a should that floats off to another place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e2. Death Is Like a Sleep!\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHave you ever seen the acronym R.I.P. on a gravestone? It stands for \"Rest In Peace.\" Where did the idea that death is like a sleep come from? The Bible! \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn Scripture, the word \"sleep\" is used often to describe death. \"Solomon \u003cem\u003eslept \u003c\/em\u003ewith his fathers and was buried\" (1 Kings 11:43 KJV). And when His friend Lazarus died, Jesus said, \"Lazarus \u003cem\u003esleeps\u003c\/em\u003e\" (John 11:11). His disciples thought Lazarus was taking a nap, but \"Jesus spoke of his death\" (v. 13). \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd what happens when you sleep? You are temporarily unconscious to everything that is happening around you. That's exactly what happens to us at death. So it wouldn't make sense to say that you're asleep if you're actually awake and aware in heaven, would it? And when Jesus said Lazarus was asleep, He couldn't have believed that His friend had a soul that was awake in heaven at that very moment, could He?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNOTE: Jesus also compared death to a sleep because, one day, you and everyone else will wake up from it!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e3. Deceptions About Death!\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThroughout history, Satan has been deceiving people about what happens when we die. First he lied to Eve, saying, \"You will not surely die\" (Genesis 3:4). Yet God had said that she would perish—not that she, as soon as she died, would start spending eternity in another place. (See Genesis 2:16, 17.)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEver since, billions of sincere people have latched onto the notion that life really does not end at death. Whether it's through an \"immortal soul,\" reincarnation, or transmigration, they believe that those who pass away are apparently still living, immune from death.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut it's just not true! \"There is not work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going\" (Ecclesiastes 9:10). No work, no knowledge, no anything in the grave, the Bible says.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e4. You Can't Communicate with the Dead!\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's why, no matter how many people believe otherwise, there is no way for you to speak with those who have died. Moreover, the Bible forbids even attempting to: \"There shall not be found among you … a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead\" (Deuteronomy 18:10, 11).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSaul, Israel's first king, learned a hard lesson. Hoping to get advice from a dead prophet, he sought out a witch known for calling up the deceased. The Bible says the witch did no see Samuel, but \"an old man … coming up\" (1 Samuel 28:14). Moreover, Saul only \"perceived\" that it was Samuel, but it was not. In the end, \"Saul died for his unfaithfulness … and also because he consulted a medium\" (1 Chronicles 10:13).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhy is God adamant that we don't engage in such practices? Because Satan, who can transform himself into an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), can also appear as a loved on who has died—and the Lord doesn't want you to be deceived by Satan's lies like Saul and Eve were!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e5. Everyone Will Be \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cb\u003eResurrected—EVERYONE!\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe story is told that when W.C. Fields, famous comedic actor and noted drunkard, lay on his deathbed, he started reading the Bible. \"Bill,\" a friend exclaimed, \"you've never been a churchgoing man. Why do this now?\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe dying man answered, \"I'm looking for loopholes!\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt seems Fields didn't want to face a judgment, but the Bible says, \"It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment\" (Hebrews 9:27). It's true! You and everyone who has ever lived, sinner and saint, will be resurrected one day to stand in judgment. Death Doesn't Have to Be Eternal—Only If You Choose It!\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGod is \"not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance\" (2 Peter 3:9). Here, to \"perish\" means to die the second death (Revelation 2:11), from which there is no resurrection. Speaking of those who reject Jesus' mercy, the Bible says that one day, they will burn up, leaving \"them neither root nor branch\" (Malachi 4:1).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnlike the sleep of death that all humans face, the \"second death\" occurs \u003cem\u003eafter\u003c\/em\u003e the judgment an it \u003cem\u003eis \u003c\/em\u003eeternal. We can expect suffering to happen—either by our own hands, the hands of others, or even the hands of the devil. God can give us peace even when the world around us is falling apart. If, as the Bible says, “all things work together for good to those who love God” (Romans 8:28), then surely God can use our suffering to save us and others. He rejoices in your victories and accomplishments; He sorrows alongside you when you hurt.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMoreover, God is no stranger to loss, having seen the anguish and sacrifice of His own Son, Jesus, to save you from a sinful world. That’s why the Bible affirms God’s closeness during times of sorrow. “The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart and saves such as have a contrite spirit” (Psalm 34:19). According to Daniel, a book of the Bible closely connected with Revelation, “beasts” represent kingdoms, nations, and ruling powers (7:17).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis beast in Revelation is a nation that is distinguished by both its political and its religious influence: It has “power, [a] throne, and great authority” (Revelation 13:2) while commanding worship from “\u003cem\u003eall\u003c\/em\u003e the world” (v. 3).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis beast is also known by another name: the Antichrist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003col start=\"2\"\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e The \u003cem\u003emark\u003c\/em\u003e of the beast symbolizes the beast’s authority.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA second beast, another influential nation also spoken about in Revelation, will work with the first beast to “[cause] all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right \u003cstrong\u003ehand\u003c\/strong\u003e or on their \u003cstrong\u003eforeheads\u003c\/strong\u003e” (13:16). This mark will be compelled on people through a combination of deception and the threat of economic sanctions and even death (vv. 12–17).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd here’s another important fact: Behind all this is the dragon—Satan (12:9; 13:4).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003col start=\"3\"\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e The mark of the beast centers on \u003cem\u003eworship\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLet’s now look at how God calls us to obey His laws: “Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds” (Deuteronomy 11:18 NIV). To illustrate this, He said, “Tie them as symbols on \u003cstrong\u003eyour hands\u003c\/strong\u003e and bind them on \u003cstrong\u003eyour foreheads\u003c\/strong\u003e.” In other words, worship God through your hands—that is, by what you do; and by your thoughts—that is, by what you think.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDo you see the parallels with Revelation 13:16? That is exactly how the mark of the beast is described! Thus, this mark is not a literal physical mark on or inside the body; it’s not some tattoo or computer chip. It is called the seal of God. In the final battle, God’s seal is given to all those who heed this message: “Fear God and give glory to Him, … \u003cem\u003eworship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water\u003c\/em\u003e” (Revelation 14:7).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis language comes straight out of the only one of the Ten Commandments that addresses both worship and creation—the fourth commandment. This identifies God’s seal as His special day of worship, the seventh day: “I also gave them My Sabbaths, to be\u003cem\u003e a sign between them and Me” \u003c\/em\u003e(Ezekiel 20:12). However, the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1982 caused a massive mudflow that pushed the water of Spirit Lake over its borders and down the valley. In just 24 hours, a 140-footdeep “miniature Grand Canyon,” complete with layers and strata, was formed, providing real-world evidence that catastrophic, earth-transforming events can occur rapidly. Thus, real-world evidence supports the biblical account of a worldwide catastrophic flood (Genesis 7:11–24).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e2. The Cambrian Explosion \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Grand Canyon’s rock layers are said to reveal millions of years of evolutionary\u003cbr\u003ehistory. But just above it, the “Cambrian” layer contains complete fossils of nearly every modern animal group. But how could such a relationship have evolved? If the moth needs the plant and the plant needs the moth, which came first? And how could either have survived independently? Irreducible Complexity\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIrreducible complexity refers to a biological system composed of multiple interdependent parts, where removing any one part renders the entire system non-functional. For instance, the eye—with its lens, retina, optic nerve, cornea, iris, etc.—requires all these components to work harmoniously for vision to occur. This could\u003cbr\u003enot have arisen through gradual evolutionary steps, suggesting it was the work of an intelligent designer. Darwin confessed, “If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed, which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down” (On the Origin of Species, 1859). While evolutionists have estimated her to have lived around 200,000 years ago, they have no explanation as to why humans existed for so long\u003cbr\u003ewith so little population increase—for instance, from 1804 to 2022, humanity exploded from one billion to 8 billion people! What makes this remarkable is that Joseph and Mary lived in Nazareth and would typically have had children there—yet\u003cbr\u003ethey were required to travel to Bethlehem for the Roman census noted above.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut why were Joseph and Mary required to travel to Bethlehem at all? The prophet Jeremiah—writing over 600 years earlier— foretold that a righteous King would come\u003cbr\u003efrom David’s royal line (Jeremiah 23:5, 6). Both Joseph (Matthew 1:1–16) and Mary\u003cbr\u003e(Luke 3:23–38) were descendants of David, so Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, the city of\u003cbr\u003eDavid, aligns perfectly with this prediction. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). This prophecy, written over 700 years before Jesus’ birth, pointed to a miraculous event: a virgin giving birth to a holy Child.
